Last week, I had the opportunity to visit The Shed in Cotteridge Park, a fantastic volunteer-led community space that brings people together through creativity, activity, and conversation. I joined the weekly morning walk, where I had the chance to talk with local residents about the importance of accessible community spaces and the incredible impact The Shed has had on their lives.
The Shed is a true testament to the power of grassroots initiatives. Run entirely by volunteers, it provides a welcoming and inclusive environment where people of all ages can connect, learn new skills, and enjoy activities that promote well-being. From the weekly Crafternoon and Gardening sessions to Tai Chi and Rounders, there’s something for everyone. These free events not only encourage people to stay active but also help combat loneliness and strengthen community ties.
Hearing firsthand from residents about how The Shed has supported them, whether through meeting new people, learning a new craft, or simply having a space to relax, reinforced the vital role these spaces play in our local communities. It’s places like The Shed that make a real difference, proving that when communities come together, they can create something truly special.
I want to extend my thanks to the incredible volunteers who keep The Shed running and to everyone who shared their experiences with me. I will continue to champion spaces like this, ensuring that community-led projects receive the recognition and support they deserve
